2019 Intercounty Champions
Sun Life Financial Minor Pee Wee T2 Stratford Nationals are 2019 Intercounty Champions!

The Sun Life Financial Minor Pee Wee T2 Stratford Nationals started the Intercounty Championships in Woodstock with a bye as they tore up the league posting a 21-2-1 record to lock down first place.

On Saturday morning the team faced Waterloo and as pitcher Zach Schultz kept the scoresheet clean inning to inning giving up only two hits as the Stratford bats caught fire scoring at will en route to an easy 15-0 victory.  The next game saw them face a pesky Woodstock team that Stratford had just eliminated from OBA’s the Monday prior.  Despite holding a good lead early in the game, the Nationals fell off their game in the 4th inning allowing 12 runs.  Chipping away inning by inning, Stratford couldn’t make up the difference eventually falling 16-11.  Standing between a semifinal game Sunday was Guelph, the only team that had beaten Stratford all year in league play.  Blake Hodgson was on the mound and limited the Guelph team at the plate.  Stratford took advantage of some timely hits by Zach Schultz, Aaron Green and Henry Tuer and some great defensive plays by Nathan Siebert and Austin Musselman to come out on top by a score of 7-2.

Sunday saw the Nationals up against Cambridge who surprised the field by beating Woodstock in their game the day prior by a score of 3-1.  Pitcher Rylan Hall threw a no-hitter through the four-inning game – one hit batter away from perfection.  The Nationals bats pounded the ball all over the park, keeping the Cambridge team scrambling for an answer.  A 16-0 mercy of the Cubs setup a rematch with the Woodstock team and a chance for redemption.

Reid Gerber was on the mound and held the Wranglers scoreless through three innings with Stratford holding a solid 5-0 lead.  Woodstock, not to be taken lightly, plugged away and narrowed the gap inning by inning, eventually knotting the game up at 5 in the 6th inning.  Grady Murphy was next up in relief of teammate Blake Hodgson and got a Woodstock slugger to pop up to the catcher Colin Slattery to end the inning.  A quiet bottom of the sixth for Stratford gave Woodstock their crack at breaking the tie but Murphy would have nothing of it as he popped up two batters and snagged a come-backer to end the inning.  The bottom of the 7th would play out like a Hollywood ending.  Dawson White ripped the first pitch up the middle for a single that ignited a spirited Stratford contingent at the park.  Reid Gerber was next at the plate and sent a rocket of a line drive to the fence in centerfield.  Dawson White ripped past third and as the relay came in just short of second from the fence the team erupted as they saw the ball drop to the ground. White scored easily and arms raised, jumped into a swarm of his frantic teammates – the ICBA Championship was theirs.

The team hopes to keep the momentum as they enter OBA’s in Halton Hills this coming weekend.
